NetSuite plugs into Oracle financial software

A new Oracle-specific version of NetSuite’s OneWorld feeds data to the Oracle mothership

While all the hubbub last week was around Oracle OpenWorld, where vendors nattered on about increasing application agility and clearing out clutter in the middleware stack, NetSuite -- a software-as-a-service company in which Larry Ellison is a major investor -- made an interesting announcement .

NetSuite's new OneWorld for Oracle combines cloud computing with Oracle's enterprise apps, letting users manage business at the division level with NetSuite's offering, then roll the data up to Oracle's E-Business Suite.  For example, a restaurant chain could use NetSuite's software at individual restaurants, then feed all the financial data into Oracle's software for corporate-level financial aggregation. In this way, individual stores get a lightweight solution to manage their operations, while the corporate level gets to use its Oracle apps for an enterprise-wide view of business operations.

[ In other Oracle news, the company's long-awaited Fusion apps will launch in 2010. ]

The key to the whole operation is SuiteCloud Connect for Oracle, which can use such standards as SOAP, JavaScript, and ODBC (open database connectivity) for integration and migration of data between OneWorld and E-Business Suite. The data flow can be automated across most ERP (enterprise resource planning) data types, including invoices, purchase orders, and shipments.

NetSuite's play is to piggyback on Oracle's installed base by augmenting Oracle apps. And with Larry Ellison as a backer, it may well succeed.
